On a quest to keep myself from impulsive yarn splurges, I took the advice of a former co-worker and talented knitting friend to spin and dye my own fibers. I like to use Lily's Sugar and Cream yarn because it's 100% cotton (which I absolutely love by the way), made here in the US, and I can get from any Wal-Mart at any given time of the day. My only problem with that was, as much as I crochet, I'm less likely to see new colors. It seems to vary with the season. Sure, there are colors I haven't tried yet, but they don't have many of your basic primary colors. I began viewing YouTube and Ehow videos on how to use drop spindles and different techniques on ways to hand-dye fibers and I was ready to go! The trouble with getting started was: I couldn't find a drop spindle anywhere! I was sure that I would find it at Hobby Lobby or Michaels arts and crafts but I was mistaken. Thanks to Google I found some small fiber stores here in Huntsville and came across a drop spindle kit that included a couple of ounces of ombre merino wool and a DVD on how to use the spindle. The cost was about 38 bucks after tax. Thank you Knitting Expressions! I even happened to come across a fiber store about a mile away from my apartment that gave me some advice on spinning as well as free samples of fibers: Merino, Alpaca, and of course, cotton! Thank you Fiber Artworks! Although I was informed that cotton was too heavy of a fiber to use with the particular spindle I had purchased, I found a way to use it anyway and still came up with satisfying results!
