I finally tried my hand at crocheting a scarf last week. I've done them in the past by knitting and I've been happy with the results. Crocheting them seems to take a little more time to me, it could be the fact that in knitting, I was working horizontally opposed to vertically. Overall, I used simple stitches, altered the pattern to achieve some texture, and I'm happy with the results.
Scarves are probably one of the simplest patterns to follow, all you have to do is:1. Make 201 chains. Half-double crochet (hdc) into the 3rd chain (ch) from hook and in each chain across. (200 stitches total). Make two ch and turn work.
2. Hdc into the 2nd st from hook and into each st across to the end. Make 2 ch and turn work.
3. Repeat step 2 for about six to eight more rows (this depends on how wide you want your first color to be) then change colors*
*work your last stitch until you're left with two loops on your hook. cut the yarn leaving a tail long enough to weave into your work upon completion, or at the start of your new-color round. Pull a loop of the 2nd color through the two loops on your hook. Continue your row to the end.
4. Work the 2nd color until you achieve your desired width of the stripe (I did one row), then switch back to the 1st color to complete a few more rows (I chose 3 rows). When you're satisfied, clip yarn to leave a tail, then weave it into your finished work**
** you can use a tapestry needle or your crochet hook to weave in all tails. That's it!
